How to get your first 1,000 followers on X, for free

My account reached 1,000 followers on 6 September 2026, ten days after my first post. No ads, no follow-for-follow. This is what I did, with the numbers from X Analytics for every day of the first week.

Short answer

Your first 1,000 followers come from the people you talk to, not from your posts. Spend most of your time in other people’s conversations: answer “let’s connect” posts in your niche, write your own connect post that names who you want to meet, reply to every reply, and follow back the people you actually talk to. Once you pass about 500, post questions your audience can answer in one line.

My account went from 4 followers to 500 in six days and to 1,000 in ten. In the first week my posts got a median of 165 views, and 745 people followed me anyway.

What the first week looked like

Here is my first week, day by day. The post columns are the public counts under each post; new followers come from X Analytics. The paid promotion on 28 August is left out of the post columns.

Replies: the replies each day’s posts had received by 30 September. New followers: new follows per day in X Analytics, before unfollows.

Look at 31 August: three posts with a median of 414 views and 11 replies between them, and 204 new followers. X does not say where those followers came from, but three posts that quiet can hardly explain them; the conversations around them can. Then 3 to 6 September took me from 500 to 1,000: 23 posts with a median of 1,054 views, and 542 new followers.

Step 1: decide who you are talking to

The most common mistake is to start publishing polished insights or deep technical threads into the void. Nobody is listening yet, so nobody reads them. Before your first post, write one sentence that says who you talk to, where they are stuck, and what you share. Mine: “I talk to founders and builders with $0 MRR who ship a lot and sell little, and I share the journey of building my 8th project in public.”

Test it: if you cannot picture one person reading your post and replying “same here”, the audience is too broad. “Tech people” is not an audience; “backend devs trying to launch their first paid SaaS” is. Then set up the profile for that person: a photo of your face, a bio that says who you are for and what you are building, and a short pinned post about who you are.

Step 2: answer people who want to meet people

Every day people in your niche post “let’s connect” or “looking to connect with people building…”. They are asking for exactly what you need: a conversation. Search X for “let’s connect” or “looking to connect” plus your niche word, sort by Latest, and answer the ones that fit your audience sentence. Say what you do in a few words and ask one real question about their post.

My per-reply data only starts on 14 September, after my first 1,000, but it shows a clear effect for this kind of reply: between 14 and 30 September, 70 of my replies asked to connect and brought 14 new followers, about one in five. My other 863 replies brought 5. Keep it to a handful a day, each written for that post: X’s authenticity policy treats bulk, high-volume unsolicited replies as spam. The full breakdown is in the reply game on X.

Step 3: write your own connect post

Describe who you want to meet, specifically enough that the right person thinks “that’s me”. Do not ask for follows; ask people to say hi. Don’t judge the format by your first try: my first five connect posts, all on 29 August, got 0 or 1 replies each. The one on 1 September got 24, and these two, on 2 and 4 September and still under 1,000 followers, got 79 and 54:

A week later I described people by their situation instead of their field: “$0 MRR, a premium AI stack, a logo before a product”. That post got 130 replies on 8,933 views. Name a group precisely enough that people recognise themselves.

Step 4: answer every reply, follow back the people you talk to

Every reply under your post is a person who chose to talk to you, so answer every one; that is where relationships start. When someone from your niche replies, follows you or answers your connect post, look at their profile. If they fit your audience sentence, follow them and keep the conversation going. People you talk to see each other in the replies, and your posts start reaching them.

X Analytics for my first week: 745 new followers, but only 600 profile visits. Many people followed straight from a reply, a notification or a follow back, without ever opening my profile.

This is not a trade. “I follow back everyone”, follow trains and “drop your handle” threads are a coordinated exchange of follows, which X’s authenticity policy lists as engagement spam.

Step 5, from 500 followers: posts people can answer

Once a few hundred people know you, your own posts start to travel. My median went from 165 views in the first week to 1,054 between 3 and 6 September. What changed was the format: posts the people I had met could answer in one line. Across my account, posts with a question mark got a median of 24 replies, posts without one 17.

  • Multiple choice. “How many usage limit do you have? A) 3 B) 2 C) 1 D) 0 :(” got 29 replies on 5 September. Replying costs one letter.
  • An open question about your field. “What will be the most important skill in 2030?” got 28 replies on 3 September.
  • A small public goal. “If I hit 1000 followers I will clean 🧼 my desk” got 17 replies, and my updates at 900 and at 1,000 followers got 27 and 25.

After 1,000, opinions and fast reactions to big releases take over; that stage is in how to grow on X in 2026.

Getting followers for free: what to skip

  • Paying for reach. My one promoted post got 343,564 views and 9 replies; X’s analytics show 7 new followers that day. A similar unpaid post got 24 replies on 888 views.
  • Follow-for-follow and mass following. X prohibits follow churn and indiscriminate following, and caps every account at 400 follows a day.
  • Apps that promise followers. X’s rules prohibit using or promoting third-party services or apps that claim to add followers.
  • Asking for likes, reposts or follows. It attracts the wrong people, and X can remove accounts that keep asking for engagement from its creator program.

FAQ

How long does it take to get 1,000 followers on X?

It depends on your niche and on how much time you spend in conversations. My account took ten days, from its first post on 27 August to 1,000 followers on 6 September 2026, with 58 posts in that time. That is one account’s result, not a promise.

Can you get followers on X for free?

Yes. Apart from one paid promotion that brought almost nothing, all of my growth was organic: replies to people in my niche, connect posts, question posts and following back the people I talked to.

How many replies a day should a new account write?

Start with about ten thoughtful replies a day to people in your niche, plus an answer to every reply you get. Quality matters more than the count: X treats bulk, unsolicited or copy-pasted replies as spam.

Should I follow back everyone who follows me?

No. Follow back the people who fit your audience and who you actually talk to. “I follow back everyone” is an exchange of follows, which X lists as engagement spam.

What should I post when I have zero followers?

Short, human posts: who you are, what you are building, a simple question, and a connect post every few days. Expect low views; 22 of my first 35 posts got under 300. Put most of your time into replies.
