The reply game on X: what 933 of my replies actually did
X Analytics lists 933 replies from my account between 14 and 30 September 2026, each with its impressions, profile visits and new followers. Here is what they show about the reply game, and how to reply because of it.
Short answer
Replies are how a new account meets people, not how it gets reach. My 933 replies got a median of 15 impressions each and brought 19 new followers in total; the 70 replies that asked to connect brought 14 of them. So reply where people want a conversation, say who you are, ask one real question, and answer every reply under your own posts.
933 replies in numbers
| Replies | Count | Impressions | Median each | Profile visits | New followers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asked to connect | 70 | 1,447 | 14.5 | 68 | 14 |
| All other replies | 863 | 22,375 | 15 | 176 | 5 |
| All replies | 933 | 23,822 | 15 | 244 | 19 |
| My posts, same days | 150 | 362,090 | 1,621 | 3,869 | 165 |
Three things stand out:
- Connect replies did not get more reach. Their median was 14.5 impressions, against 15 for everything else.
- They got far more out of it: 0.97 profile visits per reply against 0.20, and one new follower for every five replies against one for every 173.
- Replies were never my reach. In the same 17 days my posts got about 15 times the impressions of all my replies together.
Where to reply
- Under posts where people ask to meet people. Search X for “let’s connect” or “looking to connect” plus your niche word, and sort by Latest. These authors asked for a conversation, so a hello is welcome rather than noise.
- Under the accounts your people reply to. Pick about ten accounts the people you want to meet reply to every day, and join those conversations with something specific.
- Under your own posts. Answer every reply. Each one is a person who chose to talk to you.
In my first week X counted 745 new followers but only 600 profile visits, so many people followed from a reply or a notification without opening my profile. Your reply is often the whole first impression. How that first week went, day by day, is in how to get your first 1,000 followers on X.
How to write a reply that starts a conversation
The replies that brought followers were short and personal: a reaction to the post, sometimes a few words about me, then a question or a plain hello. Three of mine, without the handle of the person I replied to:
Haha, nice. How did the beta test go? Can we connect?
I agree, I think we should all work on this. I’m technical and would rather build than sell, but I’ve decided to change that and start posting on X. May we connect??
Another founder from Poland 🇵🇱
A plain “Hi” brought 2 followers on 321 impressions. Of the 5 followers my 863 other replies brought, that “Hi” and the Poland reply account for 4. A reply that disagreed with someone’s take and then asked to connect got 201 impressions, 2 replies and no followers. Disagreeing is fine, but it is not an introduction.
When replies stop being your reach
On 17 September I noticed that almost all of my impressions now came from my own posts, not from replying under big accounts. From then on posts carried the reach: between 14 and 30 September they brought 165 of the followers X could attribute, my replies 19. What I posted at that stage is in how to grow on X in 2026.
There is a second reason not to count on replies for reach. X’s Original Content Rewards program asks for 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, and impressions on replies are excluded. Replies build the audience; posts are what the payout counter measures. Keep replying for the people, and let your posts carry the numbers.
Reply rules that keep your account safe
X’s authenticity policy lists as content spam “bulk, aggressive, high-volume unsolicited replies”, replies that promote something and have nothing to do with the original post, and copy-pasted identical posts. Coordinating to exchange likes, replies, reposts or follows is engagement spam. Enforcement includes restricted reach and downranking your posts in replies. In practice:
- Write every reply for that post. Never paste the same reply under many posts.
- Keep connect replies to a handful a day, under posts that asked for them.
- Stay on topic: no links to your product under unrelated posts.
- No reply-for-reply groups or engagement pods.
FAQ
Does replying help you grow on X?
Yes, but through relationships rather than reach. My 933 replies between 14 and 30 September 2026 got a median of 15 impressions each, yet the 70 that asked to connect brought 14 new followers, about one for every five replies.
What is a reply guy on X?
Someone who replies under other people’s posts all the time, often under big accounts. As a growth strategy it works for meeting people, not for borrowing reach: only 23 of my 933 replies reached 100 impressions.
How many replies should I post a day?
X’s rules give no number; they ban bulk, duplicated and unsolicited replies. Start with about ten thoughtful replies a day to people in your niche, each written for that post, plus an answer to every reply you get.
Do replies count toward X creator payouts?
No. X’s Original Content Rewards program requires 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, and impressions on replies are excluded (X Help Center, checked 8 October 2026).
Should I reply to big accounts to get seen?
You can, but expect little reach: more than half of my 933 replies got 15 impressions or fewer. Replies that asked to connect brought far more followers for the same reach.
