Twitter monetization options for X creators, side by side
Twitter monetization, now X monetization, comes down to three kinds of routes: X pays you for impressions, followers pay you a monthly subscription, or you sell something of your own. Here they are side by side, with what each requires, how to set it up, and what my own account shows: X accepted it into its payout program on 17 October 2026.
Short answer
Start with the route your account can reach now. Original Content Rewards needs Premium, 500 verified followers and 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in 90 days, and X reviews every application. Subscriptions ask for more: 2,000 verified followers and 5 million organic impressions in 3 months. A product, a service or a sponsored post needs no X program at all, only people who trust you enough to pay.
For the bigger picture, start with how to make money on Twitter (X). The details are in X monetization requirements and how much X pays for views.
Twitter monetization options side by side
One row per route: who pays, what X requires where it runs a program, how to set it up, and what my own account shows on 18 October 2026.
| Route | Who pays you | What you need | How to set it up | My account |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platform payouts: Original Content Rewards | X, every two weeks; $30 minimum | Premium, 500 verified followers, 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in 90 days, original posts; X reviews each application | Apply in Creator Studio, then connect X Money (US) or a Stripe account with an ID check (elsewhere) | Accepted on 17 Oct 2026; bank details and ID sent; first payout scheduled for 23 Oct, amount not known yet |
| Subscriptions on X | Subscribers, monthly | 18+, active in the last 30 days, 2,000 verified followers, 5 million organic impressions in 3 months | Apply in Creator Studio under Subscriptions; pick a monthly price from X’s price points | — |
| Your own product | Buyers | A product people want, and a checkout outside X | Build it, sell it from your own site, link it from your profile | I sell this guide and build Bangerkit |
| Services | Clients | A skill people already ask you about | Say what you offer and how to book you | — |
| Sponsored posts | Brands | Steady posting in one niche | Agree a price per post; label paid posts | — |
| Paid community or newsletter | Members | People who want more than your free posts | Host it off X and pin a link to it | — |
A dash means I have no numbers of my own for that route yet.
The biggest difference is control. The first two rows depend on X: it sets the bar, reviews your application and can change the rules. The last four need no approval from X; they depend on whether people want what you offer.
Platform payouts: Original Content Rewards
Original Content Rewards pays for qualified impressions: unique impressions from Premium users on the Home Timeline, with at least half of the post visible, minus paid, promoted, artificial and fraudulent ones. The tradeoffs:
- X decides. Meeting every requirement doesn’t guarantee admission. A rejected application gets one appeal; after that you can reapply in 42 days.
- You have to keep qualifying. Premium stays mandatory, and the program forbids repeatedly asking people to engage and using bots or tools that artificially generate likes, follows or views.
- Not every post earns. Copied, minimally modified or automated content, posts with a helpful Community Note and content focused only on monetization coaching or maximizing payouts are ineligible.
- You don’t know the rate in advance. X’s page gives no rate per view or per 1,000 impressions; how much X pays for views explains what counts.
X’s Creator Monetization Standards add basics for every monetizing creator: an account active for at least 3 months, a complete profile, a verified email and two-factor authentication. The full checklist is in X monetization requirements.
My counter went from 1,200 verified impressions on 3 September to 500,000 on 17 October, 44 days later, and X accepted my application the same day. If an article quotes 5 million impressions for ad revenue sharing, it describes Creator Revenue Sharing, which stopped taking new creators on 7 August 2026.
Subscriptions: followers pay you monthly
With Creator Subscriptions, followers pay you a monthly fee for subscriber-only posts and Spaces, posts where only subscribers can reply, and a badge next to their name when they reply to you. You choose the price from X’s price points; according to Kompozy, prices commonly run from $2.99 to $9.99 a month. X takes no revenue share: creators can earn up to about 97% of the gross, and the deductions are payment processing or app store fees, cancellations and refunds.
The tradeoff is the bar: 2,000 verified followers, four times what payouts ask for, and 5 million organic impressions in the last 3 months. You apply in Creator Studio under Subscriptions; X says eligible creators who aren’t selected go on a waitlist. If you deactivate later, you lose all active subscribers and have to meet the criteria again to come back.
Audience-led revenue: products, services, sponsorships
The last four rows go through no X program, so there is no application to wait for. According to Monetag, an ad network:
- Sponsored posts have a starting range of $50 to $500 per post, depending on reach. Brands look for creators who already talk about their industry, so post consistently in one niche, and disclose paid posts with #ad or #sponsored.
- Services can be 1-on-1 consultations once people see you as an expert, or ghostwriting and post templates if your writing gets engagement.
- Communities and newsletters live off X, for example on Discord, Patreon, Substack or Beehiiv, with a pinned post pointing to them.
- Your best threads can become blog posts that earn from ads or affiliate links.
My own products are this guide, a PDF, and Bangerkit, an app I build. The catch of this whole side fits in one of my posts:
Unpopular opinion: getting 3K followers is easier than selling a single $19/month subscription
It’s an opinion, not a measurement. But it names the tradeoff: nobody at X has to approve you, and nobody in your audience has to buy.
Which route fits your stage
- Under 500 verified followers: neither X program above is open to you yet. Most of your time belongs to growth (your first 1,000 followers on X); if people already ask what you do, a small product or service needs no approval from X.
- Past 500 verified followers, short of 500,000 verified impressions: Original Content Rewards is the nearest goal. Watch the counter in Creator Studio: mine rose by 7,652 a day on average in September and by 17,188 a day from 1 to 17 October. Your pace will differ.
- Over both bars: apply, set up payouts and keep posting original work; the program pays for the qualified impressions your posts keep earning.
- 2,000 verified followers and 5 million organic impressions: Subscriptions open up, if your followers want more than your free posts.

Common mistakes when choosing a route
- Following a closed program. Articles about ad revenue sharing and 5 million impressions describe Creator Revenue Sharing, closed to new enrollments since 7 August 2026. The 5 million figure still applies to Subscriptions, not to payouts.
- Treating followers as money. Neither X program pays per follower: payouts follow qualified impressions, Subscriptions follow subscribers.
- Paying for reach. Paid and promoted impressions are left out of the qualified impressions X pays for.
- Posting only about monetization. Content focused only on monetization coaching, monetization discussion or maximizing payouts is ineligible for Original Content Rewards.
- Hiding sponsorships. Monetag tells creators to disclose paid posts with #ad or #sponsored.
FAQ
Can you monetize a Twitter account?
Yes. X pays creators it accepts into Original Content Rewards for qualified impressions, X’s Subscriptions let followers pay you monthly, and you can sell a product, services or sponsored posts to your audience. The first two come with X’s requirements and X’s approval; the others go through no X program.
Do you need X Premium to make money on X?
For X’s own programs, yes. Original Content Rewards requires an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, or a Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription, when you apply and while you stay in, and X’s Creator Monetization Standards ask every monetizing creator for an active Premium subscription or one of those plans. Selling your own product, services or sponsored posts happens outside X’s programs.
How much are 10k followers on Twitter worth?
X pays nothing per follower: Original Content Rewards pays for qualified impressions, and followers only count toward eligibility. Followers matter most for sponsored posts, where Monetag, an ad network, gives $50 to $500 per post as a starting range depending on reach, without tying it to a follower count.
How much do 1 million views pay on X?
X’s Original Content Rewards page gives no rate, and it pays for qualified impressions, not views: unique Home Timeline impressions from Premium users, without paid or promoted ones. Kompozy, writing before X replaced Revenue Sharing in August 2026, says creator-reported figures range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars per million verified impressions and that any fixed number is a guess. My first payout is scheduled for 23 October 2026; its amount isn’t known yet.
Is X’s Creator Revenue Sharing still open?
No. X stopped accepting new enrollments on 7 August 2026 and retired the program on 7 September 2026. It asked for 5 million organic impressions in 3 months; X now points creators to Original Content Rewards, which asks for 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in 90 days.
How do you turn off monetization on X?
To leave Original Content Rewards, X’s help page says to message the @Subscriptions account on X. Creator Subscriptions can be deactivated in Creator Studio under Subscriptions; you lose all active subscribers, and coming back means meeting the criteria again.
