How to make money on Twitter (X): the main paths, with my own numbers

This is how to make money on Twitter, now X, as I’ve seen it from my own account: X pays you for the attention your posts get, or you earn from the people who follow you. I first posted on 27 August 2026, with 4 followers. On 17 October, day 52, X accepted me into its creator payout program, and I crossed 4,000 followers. My first payout is due on 23 October; the amount isn’t known yet.

Short answer

There are two kinds of paths. X can pay you: its Original Content Rewards program pays accepted creators for qualified impressions every two weeks, with a $30 minimum. To apply you need X Premium, 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, and X reviews every application. Or the money comes through your audience: subscribers pay you through X’s Subscriptions, which have a higher bar, and buyers, clients or sponsors pay for your product, service or post outside any X program.

I’m on both sides: X accepted my account into Original Content Rewards on 17 October 2026, and I have my own products, this guide and Bangerkit. Each part has its own guide: X monetization requirements, how much X pays for views and the monetization options side by side.

X’s side pays for reach but needs X’s approval and follows rules X can change. The audience side pays only when someone decides your product, your time or your post is worth money.

How to make money on X with platform payouts

X’s current program is Original Content Rewards. It pays for qualified impressions: unique impressions from Premium users on the Home Timeline, with at least half of the post visible. Repeat impressions from the same account, paid or promoted impressions, and artificial or fraudulent ones don’t count.

To apply you need an active X Premium subscription, at least 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, replies excluded, plus the basics: 18 or older, a supported country, an account in good standing and original posts. X reviews every application; after a rejection you get one appeal, then you can reapply in 42 days. X monetization requirements walks through each item.

Payouts are processed every two weeks, and the minimum payout is $30. US creators are paid through X Money; everyone else connects a Stripe payout account and verifies their identity through Stripe.

Guides that mention 5 million impressions describe Creator Revenue Sharing. X stopped taking new enrollments on 7 August 2026 and retired the program on 7 September 2026.

X’s help page gives no rate per view or per 1,000 impressions, and my own first payout isn’t due until 23 October 2026. How much X pays for views explains which views count, and why a million views is not a million paid impressions.

How to make money using Twitter through your own audience

On this side your followers, or brands that want to reach them, pay you. The main routes:

  • Your own product. According to Whop, digital products are very scalable; it names software and courses as examples. Mine are this guide, a PDF, and Bangerkit, an app I build.
  • Services. Consulting, freelance work or coaching in your field, for people who already know you from your posts.
  • Sponsored posts. A brand pays you to post about it. Whop suggests reaching out to brands once you have around 5,000 to 10,000 loyal followers who actively engage with your posts.
  • Subscriptions or a paid community. X’s Creator Subscriptions let followers pay you monthly for subscriber-only posts and Spaces, and X takes no revenue share. The bar is higher than for payouts: 2,000 verified followers and 5 million organic impressions in 3 months. A paid community or newsletter hosted elsewhere goes through no X program; Whop, which hosts paid communities, recommends one as the place to bring your audience.

Each of these needs people who trust you enough to pay, and in my experience that comes slower than followers do:

Unpopular opinion: getting attention is easier than getting customers. Agree?
12 Oct 2026 · 1,774 impressions

That is an opinion, not a measurement, but it is the lesson I’d pass on: an audience doesn’t turn into income by itself. Twitter monetization options compares these routes by requirements and setup.

The counter is the number X checks for the 500,000 requirement: verified Home Timeline impressions in the last 90 days, without replies. I read it in X Creator Studio every day.

In September the counter rose by 7,652 a day on average; from 1 to 17 October, by 17,188. Between 27 August and 17 October, X Analytics counted 1,460,106 impressions on my posts and replies; the guide to what X pays for views explains why the counter shows only part of them.

52 days ago, I started my X account from zero. I remember looking at people with 1K–2K followers and thinking I’d never get there. Today, I just applied for X monetization. Still can’t believe it.
17 Oct 2026 · 4,543 impressions · 13 new followers

The growth itself is in the other guides: your first 1,000 followers on X and the reply game on X. Apart from one paid promotion on 28 August, I didn’t pay for reach.

Step by step: where to start

  1. Grow an audience in one niche. Every path needs people who know you; on my account that started with conversations, not posts. How to grow on X has the stages and the numbers.
  2. Watch the number X checks. Creator Studio shows your eligibility under Original Content Rewards; replies and impressions from unverified accounts don’t move the 500,000 counter.
  3. Apply once you meet every requirement, then set up payouts. X reviews each application; mine was accepted the day I applied.
  4. Offer one thing of your own, so your income doesn’t hang on one program’s rules. Start with what people already ask you about. The checklists for each stage and X’s payout requirements are in Talk First, the PDF.

Common mistakes

  • Planning around a closed program. Creator Revenue Sharing’s 5 million impressions no longer apply: it closed to new enrollments on 7 August 2026.
  • Counting every view. Payouts count qualified impressions: unique, from Premium users, on the Home Timeline, with paid and promoted ones left out.
  • Asking for engagement. To stay in the program, you must not keep asking people to like, reply, bookmark, follow or repost.
  • Making money the whole topic. X lists content focused only on monetization coaching, monetization discussion or maximizing payouts as ineligible, along with copied or automated posts and posts with a helpful Community Note.
  • Buying followers, views or engagement. X excludes artificial impressions, forbids bots and tools that artificially generate likes, follows or views, and can remove accounts from the program.

FAQ

Does Twitter pay you?

Yes, if X accepts you into Original Content Rewards. It pays for qualified impressions, meaning unique impressions from Premium users on the Home Timeline, every two weeks, with a $30 minimum. X accepted my account on 17 October 2026; my first payout is scheduled for 23 October, and I don’t know the amount yet.

How many Twitter followers do you need to make money?

For X’s payouts, 500 verified followers plus 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days. X’s Subscriptions ask for 2,000 verified followers and 5 million organic impressions in 3 months. Selling your own product or services goes through no X program, so there is no official number. X accepted my account on the day it crossed 4,000 followers.

How much does X pay per 1,000 views, or for 1 million views?

X’s Original Content Rewards page gives no rate. It pays for qualified impressions, not views: views from people without Premium, views outside the Home Timeline and paid or promoted views don’t count. My first payout is scheduled for 23 October 2026, and its amount isn’t known yet; the guide on how much X pays for views explains which views count.

How much does Twitter pay for 10,000 followers?

Nothing per follower: followers only count toward eligibility, which starts at 500 verified followers. They matter more for sponsored posts, where Whop suggests reaching out to brands once you have around 5,000 to 10,000 loyal followers who engage with your posts.

How does payment on X work?

Once X accepts you, you set up payouts in Creator Studio: US creators use an X Money account, everyone else connects a Stripe payout account and verifies their identity through Stripe. Payouts are processed every two weeks, with a $30 minimum.

Who is eligible for Twitter monetization?

For Original Content Rewards: 18 or older, a supported country, an account in good standing, an active Premium subscription, 500 verified followers, 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days and original posts. X’s Creator Monetization Standards add an account active for 3 months or more, a complete profile, a verified email, two-factor authentication and ID verification.
